What is a SIMPLE and COMFORTABLE Life?

A few days ago, I came across this recent NEDA survey saying that most Filipinos want a simple and comfortable life. What was curious for me is that in the survey, they tried to put a specific amount to what is SIMPLE & COMFORTABLE. Would you like to find out what’s the amount too? Here’s the answer: for a family of four, this means having a monthly gross income of ₱120,000 and enough money for day-to-day needs. While thinking about it, I remembered another survey a few months back about the HIGHEST PAYING JOBS in the Philippines.  I think it was in a Jobstreet survey where they indicated that IT people had the highest paying jobs in the Philippines. Their monthly salaries ranged from P38,000 to P86,550.

It does not take a mathematician to figure out that the P86,550 income from the HIGHEST PAYING job, CANNOT cover the P120,000 needed for someone to live a SIMPLE & COMFORTABLE life.

One thing is definitely clear from the numbers: everyone needs additional income apart from their jobs to provide a simple and comfortable lifestyle for their families.

When You Hate Your Job, But You Can’t Afford To Quit

Here’s a great article by Fitz Villafuerte from Ready To Be Rich on the 5 things you can do when you hate your job, but you can’t afford to quit.
The article reminded me of how I personally felt when I was contemplating the same things not too long ago. Being happily “unemployed” and a full-time business owner now for almost 5 years, I can say there’s help at the end of the tunnel 🙂 I remember asking myself then, “is this all there is to life…” and while I do loved my work, there were so many things I wanted to explore more.
It took me years to make that decision, and even after submitting my resignation letter I still had doubts whether I would make it or not…One thing that helped me going was when I asked my wife about it, she simply replied back, “ikaw, kaya mo pa ba ng isa pang taon? (kung nasaan ka ngayon)” I knew the answer was a resounding “NO”.
It was the moment of truth. I had better find out for myself if I can make it without a job or not. I gave myself 6 months to see if it would work. If not, I can still go back, find another job perhaps with a little less pay but nevertheless, I knew it will not be the end of the world for me. I closed my eyes, and decided to jump…and the rest as they say is history.
I wish I could say it was easy, but it is not hard either. It is simply realizing that not having a job means you value something else — the FREEDOM to dictate life in your own terms, how to use your own time, direct your efforts, and invest your money.
The good news is there’s help out there once you decide to commit. As William Hutchison Murray said,
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

5 Simple Ways to Become a Better Leader

Sometimes, we travel to places only to find ourselves circling back home. Here’s a picture of me and my wife Anna while strolling along a busy street in Singapore. It reads, “Manila St”. We went all the way to Singapore to see “Manila St” (same name as the capital city of the Philippines) 🙂

manilastIt’s been a few weeks since I got back but I haven’t had the time to digest it all until now. While I was reviewing my notes from our 8-day trip in Singapore, I got reminded of my goal when I was starting this journey of entrepreneurship. I wanted to learn HOW TO BUILD A TEAM. There were several attempts at building a business early in my professional career but all of them did not take off because I was a one-man show. I was handling everything. I didn’t know how to delegate. I didn’t know how to LEAD. That’s why I’m very excited to be sharing with you 5 ways to be a better leader I picked up from John Addison during my Singapore trip. Here they are:

  1. Decide who you are. What drives you? What makes you get up in the morning? People are attracted to people who know who they are.
  2. Build on your strengths. Build on what you are good at. Find what you are great at without trying and try very hard in your strengths. If you don’t know your strengths, a great book I can recommend is Strengths Finder 2.0. There’s an online assessment that you will have to go through to find your core strengths as a leader.
  3. Focus on what you can control.  Focus on your sphere of influence: your attitude (i.e. how you think) and your activity (i.e. what you do.) As my mentor would always say, “you can’t control the weather outside, but you can control the weather within.”
  4. Develop a peaceful core. A peaceful mind generates power. Leaders are the CALMERs, UNITERs, PEACE keepers. You got to be the EYE of the STORM. Be the person people can count on.
  5. Be a lighthouse. Lighthouses are needed when it’s dark. They are built on a rock where they can be counted on. A leader is needed when it is challenging. You as a leader need to transfer confidence to unconfident people. They’ve got to build on your confidence. Leader has to be strong. A leader has to stand out in front and be different.

Getting reminded by these 5 leadership principles allowed me to look back on my journey of becoming a better leader. As with all things that are important, knowing these things is not enough. You have to practice it in your daily decision making as a leader. You will only know you have courage if you encounter challenges that you felt you cannot overcome because of fear. The true test of leadership comes when you decide to embrace the fact that there’s no other way for you to go but to step up and be a better leader.

What excites you?

I just finished packing for our upcoming trip to Singapore, but I am so excited about this discovery I want to share it with you before I go on with my trip.  I’ve been to Singapore many times already. At least 4 times when I was still working in Malaysia, friends and family would visit me and my wife and we would accompany them to visit Singapore for a couple of days.

When I shifted my career from IT to entrepreneurship, I now visit Singapore for business. The first one was to celebrate one of my friends’ promotion to one of the leadership positions in our company. During my short stay, I got the chance to meet and share my story to OFWs who were also aspiring to become entrepreneurs. The last time I was in Singapore was around this same time last year when we received an award as one of the Top 25 Highest Income Growth Earners in the whole Pacific Region for our company.

This time we are going to Singapore once again. We opted to stay for a little longer to enjoy and have fun in Singapore. I’m also excited because one of those I met in through this blog 5 years ago are going to be awarded on stage this week. They have completed their project of earning $2,000 (USD) per week for 4 consecutive weeks. It’s going to be 7 days of fun and excitment being with my friends and teammates.

A lot has changed in the last 5 years. If I hadn’t gone into business, most probably it would be an uphill battle to get approval for vacation leave for my 7-day Singapore trip considering that I have 2 or more week-long trips again in the next coming months. Here’s our team’s group picture in Universal Studios Singapore last year.

One thing that excites me about travelling abroad is I get to meet people from different countries. During the week I will be attending our company’s Asia Pacific Convention. It is another chance to meet and greet old friends as well as meet new ones from other countries like Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and more. Last year, one of my friends from Australia, a Gen Y leader himself, shared this amazing comparison on what excites people from different generations: Baby Boomers vs Gen Y/Gen Z (Millenials?).

This is an interesting comparison on what excites different generations. Baby boomers are people who were born in 1946 to 1964. This is right after world war 2. The soldiers went back home after the war and there was a population explosion. One billion people in one generation.  This generation, is one of the biggest and they control a third of the world’s wealth. Generation Y are people who were born mid 1970’s to 1994 while Gen Z are born 1995 to 2012. These is a contrast between old and new generations.

I can definitely relate to most of those in the list for Gen Y. Now, I can understand why people think Gen Y are lazy. The reality is that Gen Y know your brain is an asset and you should think of way to achieve the same outcome faster, cheaper, easier.  That’s working smart. 

I also like to travel. In fact, back in 2011 I made a goal for myself to travel to a place I’ve never been to every quarter of the year. While I have travelled a lot over the years, this is something that I would like to experience more of in the future. It’s always a good idea to find a job where you would enjoy doing instead of slowly losing your passion for living in a job you don’t like just for the sake of earning more money. It’s also a big plus to be working in a business where you have the flexibility and control of your own time. No need to file for leaves. No need to hurry getting back to a pile of workload. With how the system works, I sometimes experience earning even more while I am on vacation. 🙂

One of the reasons I shifted my career to business was because I no longer feel that I was growing in my job.  I felt like I was just going to the office, put my 8 hours and then go home. Nothing to look forward to. Nothing to be excited about. I was slowly losing my soul.

The first few years in my job, I was very excited to learn. After 9 years of doing the same thing over and over again, I felt bored. The pay was good, but I felt like I wanted more out of life than merely earning an income. I felt there’s an exciting world out there. There are so many things to explore.

Exploring entrepreneurship felt like an exciting new frontier for me. Everyday was a learning experience. New people to meet. New ideas to master. New books to read. New places to go to. It’s been a wonderful experience being in business. It’s not without challenges, but I can never say it is boring. 🙂 Everyday is a chance to learn something new.

I am a LEARNER by heart.  I love to tinker with things. I love to explore and learn as much as I can.  That’s what excites me every day.  That’s why one of the things I loved doing in the past was reading other blogs about money. That’s why I was delighted to learn this amazing news a few weeks ago.

This blog, Rich Money Habits by akosiallan.com was included in the Top 40 Business Blogs of the Philippines according to apexgloballearning.com. I feel honored to be in the same list of some of the best business authorities and blogs in the Philippines like Entreprenuer, Go Negosyo, Money Sense, Pinoy Money Talk, and more.

It brought me back to where this blog started more than 5 years ago. I wrote the articles in this blog primarily to share my discoveries about money to the world.

Most of you, I will not have the chance to meet. Through the articles in this blog, I hope it will help you in your financial journey.

My dream is to hear your personal story one day, and get to share in your discoveries too. This world is a magnificent place to discover so many wonderful things.

Now, it’s time for me to explore and learn from Singapore and the whole world!

The One Thing You Need To Learn Before You Start Your Own Business

I realized after 5 years of helping people transition from employment to business, there is ONE THING every aspiring entrepreneur needs to learn first before considering starting his or her own business.

A lot of times, people think that having money or capital is the most important thing you need to start your own business. If you ask an employee what he is going to do after retirement, a lot of the time he will answer, “go into business.” Why? Because they think that’s the only time he will have saved enough capital to put up a business. Some even rely on their retirement pay to start building their business. If you ask me, I think that’s the riskiest thing you can do at that stage in your life. What will you do if you fail? Will you still be able to get another job? Of course not! Someone younger, faster, cheaper would have replaced your skills by then.

They say, 9 out of 10 businesses fail in the first 5 years. Out of those which remained, 9 out of 10 of them will be out of business after 10 years. Why then do most businesses fail? Is it lack of capital? Yes, possibly. But there’s more to it than having capital. You see, a business has to have a proven and tested system. There are growing pains to setting up a business. That’s why FRANCHISES were invented. Banks lend you money if you put up an established franchise like McDonalds or Jollibee. Of course, you would have to satisfy certain requirements by the bank. Having a system is important, but you can leverage on an existing and proven system instead of creating your own.

There’s something even more important than having capital and a system when it comes to starting a business. You have to master this skill, otherwise, having more money can become your worst nightmare. Have you ever heard of lotto millionaires who, when they won the lottery became instant multi-millionaires, only to lose it all only after a few months or years. Some of them end up even more in debt than before they won the lottery. Do you know anyone who bought a successful franchise, then with his inexperience mismanage the business and end up getting bankrupt? Then when the business is sold to a businessman who knows what he’s doing, suddenly, the same business that was failing climbs to profitability.

The one thing you need to know before you start your own business is to LEARN FINANCIAL LITERACY. You need to know how to handle your own money. If you are in debt or don’t have any savings, I would definitely recommend you to start developing the habits of handling your money well first.  Why? Because you may end up getting into BIGGER debts if you don’t know what you’re doing.

They say, money is neither good nor bad. It simply magnifies what you are. This means, if you can’t handle your little money, most probably, having more money will not help you. It might even ruin your life. Money is a HUGE magnifier. It magnifies who you are as a business person. If you are kind when you didn’t have money. More money will allow you to be kind to more people.

Contrary to what most people think, it takes a lot of upfront effort, money, time and resources to get a business off the ground to take it to a level where it makes enough money for you to live on.  The reason a lot of businesses fail is because they are short of cash. Why? Because the business owner doesn’t know how to manage the cash flow. Everything is going out, nothing is coming in. They don’t even know where their money is going in the first place.

If you have been living like an employee for most of your life, realize that you’ve been “conditioned” to feel safe when you receive your monthly paycheck. In most cases this happens twice a month on the 15th and on the 30th. It takes a lot of effort and years of mind reprogramming to reverse that conditioning. So if you feel you are at this stage, know that it will take some time to shift your mindset from an employee to that of a business owner.

There are times when desperation gets the better of you and the emotions of GREED and FEAR starts to kick in. FEAR of not being able to pay your bills. FEAR of not having money to pay for your family’s needs. Those are real fears. GREED comes into play when you want SOMETHING for NOTHING. Some peole ask me, “will I still be able to earn in business even without doing anything?” Sometimes, I want to answer back, “can you try not showing up to your work for months and expect to get paid a monthly salary?” Unless you’re on maternity leave or the son of the owner, more often than not, the answer to that question is simply NO. It’s when I hear these types of questions that I realize the person is not ready to get into business. Unfortunately, the same people are most vulnerable to GET-RICH-QUICK-SCHEMES. Why? Because that’s what get rich quick schemes give you, a promise to earn something without doing anything. But we all know promises are made to be broken, so a lot of the time, you end up having nothing 🙂

Unfortunately, some people are just plain lazy and stupid. They don’t want to learn. They blindly give their money, hoping that it will grow when someone else will handle it for them. Unfortunately, “hope” is not a good business strategy. Hoping that one day your financial life will change while doing the same thing over and over again, according to Albert Einstein, is simply called INSANITY.

The thing that worries me sometimes is when people having a tough time financially, become too close to the problem that they fail to see the bigger picture. For example, someone without any business skill gets started in business and gets excited  of the thought that his financial worries will soon go away. Two things can happen. One, due to sheer strength of will, hardwork, determination and tenacity, he learns everything he needs to learn in mindset and skills from books, seminars or a mentor, and after some time he eventually earns enough to get his business off the ground and succeed. The other thing that can happen is, he fails to learn and listen, insisting on his own ideas, never willing to learn anything new, never wanting to listen from someone who has been to where he wants to go, and listening to people who failed in business, soon he ends up failing miserably and eventually quitting after the first sign of discouragement. He ends up blaming everything except himself. He becomes cynical, not realizing that shifting from employment to business is different from jumping from job to job. There’s a whole wide world of difference.

Becoming an entrepreneur is a lot like riding a bike. On your first try, you will most probably fail. A lot. Then you get back up. You try again. You fail. Try again. Then finally you didn’t realize you already developed the skills enough to get you to an amateur level. If you want to compete and decide to become a professional, you may need to put in more time and money to study and master it. That’s what PROFESSIONALS do. That’s what Olympians and world-class athletes do. Remember, people pay top dollar for top value. If you bring in lots of value, people will gladly pay you for it. But if you turn in mediocre performance, the market will make sure you get the necessary feedback. You’ll fail.

One of the hardest things you will learn in building your business is this. Your results reveal the value you are creating in the market place. Numbers don’t lie. It may hurt your ego to be earning less than what you deserve, but the reality is VALUE is non-transferrable. You may be highly valuable to your job, but in business you need to create value into that particular business before you earn what you deserve.

That’s why I recommend you continue working on your job, but start to build a part-time business on the side. Having a steady flow of cash from your full-time job, will help you whether through the storm. At the same time, you can learn the necessary skills and mindset needed in order to shift your career from employment to business at your own pace. There’s a learning curve to everything. You have to learn how to think differently. Think like an entrepreneur. You have to learn the skills of marketing, sales and management.  You need to learn how to manage your money, your time and your other resources to make your business work. You also need to learn how to work with people, how to lead a team and more.

The good news is, as you start earning from your part-time business, you will have developed an additional stream of income for you and your family. As I would always say, it’s better to add additional income than to remove one. Once your side business gets going, it will allow you the flexibility to learn the ropes without worrying about what to eat. When the time comes that your part-time “thing” matches the income from your full-time job, you will have the option to quit your daytime job or stay where you are.  Jim Rohn said, “wages make you a living, profits make you a fortune”.  Once your business takes off, you can end up surprising even yourself and make yourself a fortune.

Top 3 Books You Need To Read Before You Quit Your Job and Start Your Own Business

Last week, one of my teammates asked me what are the top 3 books that has helped me in my business. Having read hundreds of books over the years, this was a tough question to answer. After some thought, I finally trimmed down my selection to just 3 (plus 1 more bonus book). 🙂 These 3 books have helped me fully-transition from my 9-year IT career to establishing a 5-year old international business in 5 countries.

Here’s a short 5-minute video of me sharing my top 3 books that has helped me in my business and why.

For those who have slow internet connection and cannot watch the video, I have listed them down here for your convenience and added more insights as well.

1. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

This is turning out to be one of the classics in business books. I’ve read this sometime in 2003 or 2004 while browsing in a bookstore. It opened my eyes to the value of going into business. Prior to reading this book, I thought the only way to earn money was by having a job. It took me sometime, and several tries until I was finally able to quit my 9-year IT career and fully transition into business in the last 5 years. Without this book, I believe I would still be stuck in a job that I no longer enjoy, felt restricted by the office rules and politics and limited growth income potential.

2. Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki

This is one of my favorite books of all time. After quitting my job, I realized there are still a lot of things that I needed to change to become a full-pledged entrepreneur. Nine years of working for a job has stilled in me a lot of habits and mindset that are not helpful in building a business.  I realized after reading this book that I will have to change my mindset. I would have to add on to the existing core values in order to thrive. I will have to find out why FREEDOM is more important than SECURITY. When you become an entrepreneur, your RESULTS will dictate how effective you are. It’s not how many hours you spent doing something, it’s the VALUE you create on those hours that’s more important. I realized later on that the SHIFT that needs to happen is more than changing from job to job. You have to change your CORE habits and values. Only then will you understand how to think differently, and get your behaviours and actions change to achieve the results you like.

3. Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras

I bought this book when I was still working as IT consultant in Malaysia. One of my favorite past time then was to go to the bookstore and check out business books. If you see me at the mall, there are only two places where you can find me, at the bookstore and at the sports store 🙂 Anyway, this book is special because it taught me what to focus on if you want to build a successful business that will stand the test of time. We all want to have something we can pass on to our children and grandchildren. If you know someone who is very rich, he might already be creating something for the 3rd or 4th generation of their clan. 🙂

4. Bonus Book: Simply Rich by Rich Devos

This is a book I bought around a year ago. It is a story of the owner of Amway. He is a legend in the direct selling industry having built one of the most recognizable brands, and becoming a Billionaire in US dollars in the process. He now owns one of the NBA teams, Orlando Magic, and lives an exciting lifestyle described in the book. While reading through it, I realized there’s so much potential going into business. Something that starts small can grow into something big; so big even your wildest imagination could not have predicted how it would turn out.

When I look back, one thing I had going for me was my DEEP HUNGER to LEARN. I knew how to work hard. But I realized working hard is only half of the equation. You also need to know what you need to work hard on. After reading countless books on motivation, mindset and more, I knew that to get to a higher income means you need to become more valuable. You can become more valuable if you can help other people solve their problems. How can you better solve their problems? Have BETTER skills! For certain professions like that of a surgeon, the skill you need to learn is how to operate on a human being. Obviously, not everyone can do it. It is a valuable skill to learn. You would have to invest a lot of time and money to become a surgeon. That’s why people are willing to pay a HUGE amount of money for it. Compare that to someone who flips burgers. Flipping burgers is a skill that most people can learn in a few minutes. They invested little money and a few minutes of their time. That’s why the pay isn’t so great for a man flipping burger.

Today, with the advent of technology, one can deliver value by leveraging technology. Anyone ambitious who is open to opportunities and willing to invest time and effort to build a system and create tremendous value can become rich. The potential for growth is HUGE! Ordinary people like us have more venues to give value to more people. Unfortunately for people who cling to job security, they will be in for a great surprise. Job security doesn’t exist anymore. Some financial analysts even say that another financial crash is about to happen (or already happening). The stock market is shaky. Some of the biggest oil companies in the world are cutting jobs because of the price going down. China is facing financial difficulties as well. The world is changing. So we must change as well.

These 3 books have changed me and I am very grateful to have made my decision to change 5 years ago. I hope they will also help you muster the same courage to make the necessary changes to improve your life. There’s help at the other end once you decide to change. As Jim Roh said, "Your life doesn’t get better by chance. It gets better by CHANGE."

10 Reasons Why You Should Never Get a Job

The other day, I was talking with a former colleague about her work in our previous company. Having resigned from work 4 and a half years ago, I was trying hard to relate with her about office politics, stress and loss of freedom on how you spend your time. After a while, I realized something in me has changed…I was no longer concerned about the same things as my former colleagues were concerned with, that is, promotions, working so hard you sacrifice lunch, dinner or time with family just to do your job. It’s a steep price to pay if you ask me.

When I got home, it made me trace my steps back to how it was when I was starting to transition from earning my income from employment to business. Don’t get me wrong, my mentor still reminds me every now and then when I unconsciously allow the “employee mindset” I’ve developed in the past to affect how I make decisions today.

There were several reasons why I quit my job. I can work hard. I knew how to work hard. Work was not a problem. I realized later on that our company is just like any business, it offers products. Unfortunately, the sad truth was in an outsourcing setup, I was the product. I got hired by the company because of my IT skills, they pay me a certain amount. My company then sells my skills to another company based in another country for a higher price. The difference on how much they are able to sell my skills to the salary they are paying me is the profit. This is the business model. It worked ok after some time. But when I realized I was paying a high price for it, not having the choice on how I want to spend my time, not having the freedom to say no, sacrificing time with my family, birthdays, holidays, health and more…just for my salary, I knew I need to make a decision to try something else.

While tracing back my steps for the past 4 and half years, I remember this blog article I read in stevepavlina.com titled “10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job.” It’s a funny and satirical way of looking at a job. It’s brutally honest. It’s painful because I can definitely relate to it. But it also liberated me and stirred in me the deep desire to learn and pursue ways on how to earn aside from my job. As Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, … I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” I am reposting the article here for your reference. Just for fun I recently asked Erin, “Now that the kids are in summer school, don’t you think it’s about time you went out and got yourself a job? I hate seeing you wallow in unemployment for so long.”

Neither of us have had jobs since the ’90s (my only job was in 1992), so we’ve been self-employed for quite a while. In our household it’s a running joke for one of us to say to the other, “Maybe you should get a job, derelict!”

It’s like the scene in The Three Stooges where Moe tells Curly to get a job, and Curly backs away, saying, “No, please… not that! Anything but that!”

It’s funny that when people reach a certain age, such as after graduating college, they assume it’s time to go out and get a job. But like many things the masses do, just because everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. In fact, if you’re reasonably intelligent, getting a job is one of the worst things you can do to support yourself. There are far better ways to make a living than selling yourself into indentured servitude.

Here are some reasons you should do everything in your power to avoid getting a job:

1. Income for dummies.
Getting a job and trading your time for money may seem like a good idea. There’s only one problem with it. It’s stupid! It’s the stupidest way you can possibly generate income! This is truly income for dummies.

Why is getting a job so dumb? Because you only get paid when you’re working. Don’t you see a problem with that, or have you been so thoroughly brainwashed into thinking it’s reasonable and intelligent to only earn income when you’re working? Have you never considered that it might be better to be paid even when you’re not working? Who taught you that you could only earn income while working? Some other brainwashed employee perhaps?

Don’t you think your life would be much easier if you got paid while you were eating, sleeping, and playing with the kids too? Why not get paid 24/7? Get paid whether you work or not. Don’t your plants grow even when you aren’t tending to them? Why not your bank account?

Who cares how many hours you work? Only a handful of people on this entire planet care how much time you spend at the office. Most of us won’t even notice whether you work 6 hours a week or 60. But if you have something of value to provide that matters to us, a number of us will be happy to pull out our wallets and pay you for it. We don’t care about your time — we only care enough to pay for the value we receive. Do you really care how long it took me to write this article? Would you pay me twice as much if it took me 6 hours vs. only 3?

Non-dummies often start out on the traditional income for dummies path. So don’t feel bad if you’re just now realizing you’ve been suckered. Non-dummies eventually realize that trading time for money is indeed extremely dumb and that there must be a better way. And of course there is a better way. The key is to de-couple your value from your time.

Smart people build systems that generate income 24/7, especially passive income. This can include starting a business, building a web site, becoming an investor, or generating royalty income from creative work. The system delivers the ongoing value to people and generates income from it, and once it’s in motion, it runs continuously whether you tend to it or not. From that moment on, the bulk of your time can be invested in increasing your income (by refining your system or spawning new ones) instead of merely maintaining your income.

This web site is an example of such a system. At the time of this writing, it generates about $9000 a month in income for me (update: $40,000 a month as of 10/31/06), and it isn’t my only income stream either. I write each article just once (fixed time investment), and people can extract value from them year after year. The web server delivers the value, and other systems (most of which I didn’t even build and don’t even understand) collect income and deposit it automatically into my bank account. It’s not perfectly passive, but I love writing and would do it for free anyway. But of course it cost me a lot of money to launch this business, right? Um, yeah, $9 is an awful lot these days (to register the domain name). Everything after that was profit.

Sure it takes some upfront time and effort to design and implement your own income-generating systems. But you don’t have to reinvent the wheel — feel free to use existing systems like ad networks and affiliate programs. Once you get going, you won’t have to work so many hours to support yourself. Wouldn’t it be nice to be out having dinner with your spouse, knowing that while you’re eating, you’re earning money? If you want to keep working long hours because you enjoy it, go right ahead. If you want to sit around doing nothing, feel free. As long as your system continues delivering value to others, you’ll keep getting paid whether you’re working or not.

Your local bookstore is filled with books containing workable systems others have already designed, tested, and debugged. Nobody is born knowing how to start a business or generate investment income, but you can easily learn it. How long it takes you to figure it out is irrelevant because the time is going to pass anyway. You might as well emerge at some future point as the owner of income-generating systems as opposed to a lifelong wage slave. This isn’t all or nothing. If your system only generates a few hundred dollars a month, that’s a significant step in the right direction.

2. Limited experience.
You might think it’s important to get a job to gain experience. But that’s like saying you should play golf to get experience playing golf. You gain experience from living, regardless of whether you have a job or not. A job only gives you experience at that job, but you gain “experience” doing just about anything, so that’s no real benefit at all. Sit around doing nothing for a couple years, and you can call yourself an experienced meditator, philosopher, or politician.

The problem with getting experience from a job is that you usually just repeat the same limited experience over and over. You learn a lot in the beginning and then stagnate. This forces you to miss other experiences that would be much more valuable. And if your limited skill set ever becomes obsolete, then your experience won’t be worth squat. In fact, ask yourself what the experience you’re gaining right now will be worth in 20-30 years. Will your job even exist then?

Consider this. Which experience would you rather gain? The knowledge of how to do a specific job really well — one that you can only monetize by trading your time for money — or the knowledge of how to enjoy financial abundance for the rest of your life without ever needing a job again? Now I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have the latter experience. That seems a lot more useful in the real world, wouldn’t you say?

3. Lifelong domestication.
Getting a job is like enrolling in a human domestication program. You learn how to be a good pet.

Look around you. Really look. What do you see? Are these the surroundings of a free human being? Or are you living in a cage for unconscious animals? Have you fallen in love with the color beige?

How’s your obedience training coming along? Does your master reward your good behavior? Do you get disciplined if you fail to obey your master’s commands?

Is there any spark of free will left inside you? Or has your conditioning made you a pet for life?

Humans are not meant to be raised in cages. You poor thing…

4. Too many mouths to feed.
Employee income is the most heavily taxed there is. In the USA you can expect that about half your salary will go to taxes. The tax system is designed to disguise how much you’re really giving up because some of those taxes are paid by your employer, and some are deducted from your paycheck. But you can bet that from your employer’s perspective, all of those taxes are considered part of your pay, as well as any other compensation you receive such as benefits. Even the rent for the office space you consume is considered, so you must generate that much more value to cover it. You might feel supported by your corporate environment, but keep in mind that you’re the one paying for it.

Another chunk of your income goes to owners and investors. That’s a lot of mouths to feed.

It isn’t hard to understand why employees pay the most in taxes relative to their income. After all, who has more control over the tax system? Business owners and investors or employees?

You only get paid a fraction of the real value you generate. Your real salary may be more than triple what you’re paid, but most of that money you’ll never see. It goes straight into other people’s pockets.

What a generous person you are!

5. Way too risky.
Many employees believe getting a job is the safest and most secure way to support themselves.

Morons.

Social conditioning is amazing. It’s so good it can even make people believe the exact opposite of the truth.

Does putting yourself in a position where someone else can turn off all your income just by saying two words (“You’re fired”) sound like a safe and secure situation to you? Does having only one income stream honestly sound more secure than having 10?

The idea that a job is the most secure way to generate income is just silly. You can’t have security if you don’t have control, and employees have the least control of anyone. If you’re an employee, then your real job title should be professional gambler.

6. Having an evil bovine master.
When you run into an idiot in the entrepreneurial world, you can turn around and head the other way. When you run into an idiot in the corporate world, you have to turn around and say, “Sorry, boss.”

Did you know that the word boss comes from the Dutch word baas, which historically means master? Another meaning of the word boss is “a cow or bovine.” And in many video games, the boss is the evil dude that you have to kill at the end of a level.

So if your boss is really your evil bovine master, then what does that make you? Nothing but a turd in the herd.

Who’s your daddy?

7. Begging for money.
When you want to increase your income, do you have to sit up and beg your master for more money? Does it feel good to be thrown some extra Scooby Snacks now and then?

Or are you free to decide how much you get paid without needing anyone’s permission but your own?

If you have a business and one customer says “no” to you, you simply say “next.”

8. An inbred social life.
Many people treat their jobs as their primary social outlet. They hang out with the same people working in the same field. Such incestuous relations are social dead ends. An exciting day includes deep conversations about the company’s switch from Sparkletts to Arrowhead, the delay of Microsoft’s latest operating system, and the unexpected delivery of more Bic pens. Consider what it would be like to go outside and talk to strangers. Ooooh… scary! Better stay inside where it’s safe.

If one of your co-slaves gets sold to another master, do you lose a friend? If you work in a male-dominated field, does that mean you never get to talk to women above the rank of receptionist? Why not decide for yourself whom to socialize with instead of letting your master decide for you? Believe it or not, there are locations on this planet where free people congregate. Just be wary of those jobless folk — they’re a crazy bunch!

9. Loss of freedom.
It takes a lot of effort to tame a human being into an employee. The first thing you have to do is break the human’s independent will. A good way to do this is to give them a weighty policy manual filled with nonsensical rules and regulations. This leads the new employee to become more obedient, fearing that s/he could be disciplined at any minute for something incomprehensible. Thus, the employee will likely conclude it’s safest to simply obey the master’s commands without question. Stir in some office politics for good measure, and we’ve got a freshly minted mind slave.

As part of their obedience training, employees must be taught how to dress, talk, move, and so on. We can’t very well have employees thinking for themselves, now can we? That would ruin everything.

God forbid you should put a plant on your desk when it’s against the company policy. Oh no, it’s the end of the world! Cindy has a plant on her desk! Summon the enforcers! Send Cindy back for another round of sterility training!

Free human beings think such rules and regulations are silly of course. The only policy they need is: “Be smart. Be nice. Do what you love. Have fun.”

10. Becoming a coward.
Have you noticed that employed people have an almost endless capacity to whine about problems at their companies? But they don’t really want solutions — they just want to vent and make excuses why it’s all someone else’s fault. It’s as if getting a job somehow drains all the free will out of people and turns them into spineless cowards. If you can’t call your boss a jerk now and then without fear of getting fired, you’re no longer free. You’ve become your master’s property.

When you work around cowards all day long, don’t you think it’s going to rub off on you? Of course it will. It’s only a matter of time before you sacrifice the noblest parts of your humanity on the altar of fear: first courage… then honesty… then honor and integrity… and finally your independent will. You sold your humanity for nothing but an illusion. And now your greatest fear is discovering the truth of what you’ve become.

I don’t care how badly you’ve been beaten down. It is never too late to regain your courage. Never!

Still want a job?
If you’re currently a well-conditioned, well-behaved employee, your most likely reaction to the above will be defensiveness. It’s all part of the conditioning. But consider that if the above didn’t have a grain of truth to it, you wouldn’t have an emotional reaction at all. This is only a reminder of what you already know. You can deny your cage all you want, but the cage is still there. Perhaps this all happened so gradually that you never noticed it until now… like a lobster enjoying a nice warm bath.

If any of this makes you mad, that’s a step in the right direction. Anger is a higher level of consciousness than apathy, so it’s a lot better than being numb all the time. Any emotion — even confusion — is better than apathy. If you work through your feelings instead of repressing them, you’ll soon emerge on the doorstep of courage. And when that happens, you’ll have the will to actually do something about your situation and start living like the powerful human being you were meant to be instead of the domesticated pet you’ve been trained to be.

Happily jobless
What’s the alternative to getting a job? The alternative is to remain happily jobless for life and to generate income through other means. Realize that you earn income by providing value — not time — so find a way to provide your best value to others, and charge a fair price for it. One of the simplest and most accessible ways is to start your own business. Whatever work you’d otherwise do via employment, find a way to provide that same value directly to those who will benefit most from it. It takes a bit more time to get going, but your freedom is easily worth the initial investment of time and energy. Then you can buy your own Scooby Snacks for a change.

And of course everything you learn along the way, you can share with others to generate even more value. So even your mistakes can be monetized.

One of the greatest fears you’ll confront is that you may not have any real value to offer others. Maybe being an employee and getting paid by the hour is the best you can do. Maybe you just aren’t worth that much. That line of thinking is all just part of your conditioning. It’s absolute nonsense. As you begin to dump such brainwashing, you’ll soon recognize that you have the ability to provide enormous value to others and that people will gladly pay you for it. There’s only one thing that prevents you from seeing this truth — fear.

All you really need is the courage to be yourself. Your real value is rooted in who you are, not what you do. The only thing you need actually do is express your real self to the world. You’ve been told all sort of lies as to why you can’t do that. But you’ll never know true happiness and fulfillment until you summon the courage to do it anyway.

The next time someone says to you, “Get a job,” I suggest you reply as Curly did: “No, please… not that! Anything but that!” Then poke him right in the eyes.

You already know deep down that getting a job isn’t what you want. So don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise. Learn to trust your inner wisdom, even if the whole world says you’re wrong and foolish for doing so. Years from now you’ll look back and realize it was one of the best decisions you ever made.”

Final thoughts. I remember making the decision to change my life about 5 years ago. The most dangerous place you can ever be in, is be in a place where you can still “endure”, because then you won’t do anything to get you out of your situation. In tagalog, “kaya mo pang tiisin.”

When I asked my wife whether to resign or not, she simply asked me back, “ikaw…kaya mo pa bang tiisin ng isa pang taon?” That’s when I realized my answer was a definite NO.

It was scary. It was liberating. It’s one of the best decisions I made in my life. Without the courage to make that decision, I can’t imagine my life having continued what I had been doing…and wasting the years blaming others, complaining and getting frustrated…every day for the last 5 years.

Thank God for taking chances. One person took a chance at me, and offered me a chance of a lifetime…and that made all the difference. If you are in the same position I was in 5 years ago, I encourage you to dig deep within you to find that inner strength, that spirit within, a small voice that’s yearning to get out and do great things! Give it a try. More people had regrets because they did NOT do something, than people who did something and failed. It’s better to say, “buti na lang” than “sayang.”

The Secret To Growth: Attending Events That Stretches Your Mind

This week, I’ve had the great opportunity to participate and attend events after events, everyday for the last 4 days. It’s been overwhelming to say the least. There are so many things to be thankful for. I can hardly wait to share them all with you.

The first event was with my business team at XTRM 1-11. My business mentor, a recognized international leader in the industry shared the highlights of last year’s performance as well as his vision for the team this year 2016. It was like attending the State of the Nation Address, because I was wearing barong tagalog, together with 100+ strong leaders of the team. Being one of the mentors of the team, I had the rare priviledge to walk the red carpet and be recognized. One of the things I got from the event was seeing my mentor share his vision. I got a glimpse on how he thinks, and how he sees the big picture. As successful as he is being the #1 top income earner in our company for 3 years in a row, he remains very humble and down to earth. From him I learned the term, "Fully-Paid Dreams". In 7 years, he has accomplished so much, what most people would only dream of in their lifetime. He has fully-paid cars and house and lot worth 8-digits combined. In life, a lot of people will have opinions, but one thing my mentor has always told me is to listen to people whose lifestyle you want to  emulate and achieve.  As for me, I think becoming a person who has fully-paid dreams is a worthwhile goal to achieve for my family. Here I am with my co-mentors taking a picture before the event. A diverse group of individuals from all walks of life and professions: doctors, nurses, IT consultants, engineers, call center agents, businessmen, and more, all very excited to help more people achieve their dreams. 🙂

The next day, my wife and I were off to Solaire Resort for our company’s 2016 recognition dinner. It was an enjoyable experience having a sit-down dinner and being with top leaders and executives in the company. We were recognized as *-Million Peso Achievers for 2nd year in a row along with 100+ other business leaders.  One of the greatest feelings I’ve experienced is in seeing those I’ve mentored get up the stage to receive their own *-Million Peso Achiever trophies as well. I’m so proud of them. Here’s a picture of us together enjoying at the ballroom lobby after the event.

After that, my wife along with hundreds of the top leaders in our company had the chance to get up close and personal with Dr. Denis Waitley, a famour motivational speaker to world class athletes and astronauts from NASA. He’s a hall of famer in the world of publick speaking and personal achievement. He stood on the same stage with other motivational speakers like Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, and other top speakers in the world. He’s 83 years old but he’s full of vitality just like a 38 year old. He is bestfriends with the founder of our company, Dr Myron Wentz, an Albert Einstein awardee for Life Sciences. They’ve been friends for 20+ years. It’s refreshing to hear personal stories and get a glimpse on the life of accomplished leaders int their fields just like them. It gave me an opportunity to discern what’s really important in life. It’s not so much about the financial blessings or material things, but on how you used those to help other people and make their lives better. It also made me realize to be grateful for the everyday blessings. 

Yesterday was the grandest event I’ve attended all week. It was our company’s Grand Celebration at Araneta Coliseum. It was an amazing experience to see so many DREAMERS from different provinces of the Philippines coming alive! There was so much ENERGY from start to finish. It was exhilirating to CHEER for my teamates as they receive their awards on stage, especially those people who I’ve got a chance to mentor directly or indirectly.

One of those people is Lois Garcia, a former colleague in my previous company, currently working full-time as a business analyst while doing the business on the side part-time. She’s a very talented lady, but a little bit reserved just like me. She achieved the milestone of earning $600 in 1 week in her business and was recognized as New Director in front of 10,000+ people in Araneta! 🙂 I’m so proud of her because she’s eager to learn. She’s open minded to legitimate income opportunities. She takes immediate action.  Most of all, she has the tenacity to see through her goals to completion inspite of the many obstacles she has gone through. Out of her part-time income in the business, she’s been able to create results like becoming a proud owner of an XTRM 1-11 Limited Edition Technomarine watch and getting a brand new i-Pad she uses to track her own business online. I’m very excited for her next accomplishments. The great news is she’s just getting started! In April, when we attend the Asia and the Pacific Convention this year, I’m sure she’ll breakthrough once again and go up the stage to receive another award! 🙂 Here we are with the awardee, Lois Garcia (center) along with new apprentices. 🙂

Another close friend and co-mentor in our team was given the opportunity to share his inspiring story. He’s once of the very first people who trusted me in business. We met 5 years ago through our real-estate investing circle. One of the most humble and down-to-earth person I know. He’s grown so much in character, leadership and business skills. He has achieved financial success, time freedom to choose his own working hours, and the opportunity to create a loving family. He’s a father with 2 kids and another one coming soon.

He was a former IT consultant just like me, having worked for 11 years in his former company. He has already accomplished so much earning for himself a 6-figure income every month from his IT career. But because he dreams of a better life for his family in terms of MONEY, TIME and HEALTH, he still seeked better opportunities.

His entrepreneurial journey started when he was opened to the idea of financial literacy through the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. He was already investing in the stock market as well as mutual funds, and in some businesses but a tragedy happend more than 5 years ago. He lost a great deal of money (in the 7-figure range), after investing in a friend’s business, who unfortunately took the money and ran away with it. It was a painful lesson that saw his dreams came crashing down.

I didn’t know what he was going through at that time, but because he was one person I looked up to, I approached him to do business with me. He grabbed the opportunity right away and the rest, as they say, is history. He was able to finally pay off his debts and live financially free. More than that, his business took off and he was able to resign from his IT career after 2 years doing the business part-time. He became a 3x- recipient of all-expense-paid Asian Cruise travels, and *-Million Peso Achievers for 3 years in a row. I’m proud of his accomplishments, but I am more proud of what kind of a leader and person he is becoming, more humble and down-to-earth as he becomes more successful. He has influenced so many people in different countries like Singapore, Japan, Canada and the Philippines. The good news is, he keeps growing as a person, that’s why his business continues to grow as well.

Here’s a picture of him sharing his story in Araneta with my picture on the big screen. It humbles me to be given credit to his life turning around, but I understand that I was merely an instrument to show the way. Ultimately, he is responsible for the success he is enjoying right now.

Today, I had the time to sit down and make sense of all the things that have happened the past few days. There are so many lessons to be learned, things to enjoy and a bright future to look forward to.

Let me share you a few things I realized.

From all the stories I’ve heard, one thing I learned is to appreciate every moment with your loved ones. Enjoy. Have fun. Live in the moment. Often times, I see people taking a video of the event, instead of BEING in the event. Sometimes, having gadgets with you takes the joy away of being fully in the moment. Absorb the energy and be fully immersed into the experience.

Attending events gives you the opportunity to expand your world. We all have different experiences in life. The magic of attending events is in having a single moment pass by, but with different perspectives we experience different moments as well in our lives.  It’s a different feeling cheering for your teammates compared to being the one going to the stage and people cheering you on. It’s also different from seeing those you mentored go up the stage themselves.

As I look back in my life, the moments of GROWTH happened when I opened myself to new ideas and experiences. When I was growing up in Ilocos, I used to think that majority of Filipinos are Ilocanos. That changed when I went to Manila and attended university. There I met other fellow students from different provinces in Visayas and Mindanao. I realized life is bigger than what I previously thought. When I started working, my world began to expand again as I got exposed to the corporate world. After my 6-month stint in the US for my former company, I was exposed to cultures from different countries. When I came back, something changed and the yearning to create a better life has been sparked inside of me. I knew then that if other people can do it, we Filipinos can also do it. I went abroad again and gained valuable experiences working with different cultures. When I came back, a new world again opened up for me — the world of business. That was more than 5 years ago. It’s true what most people say, that the life you have right now is the result of the decisions you made 5 years ago. If you want to CHANGE YOUR LIFE, the best time to make better choices is NOW, so that 5 years in the future, you will reap the harvest you have planted today.

Today I leave with you with this quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. He said, "a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." My hope is that as you expand your horizons to achieve bigger and better things in life, you don’t lose sight of the most important things: remaining humble, being grateful, and enjoying the blessings and using them to help other people to glorify the source of those blessings, the one who delights in all things that is good, our God almighty. Featured Success Story: Charles and Glaiza Villaflor

Today, I will be featuring the story of a young ambitious and hard working couple.

Meet Charles and Glaiza Villaflor. I met this couple more than a year ago through their friend and personal business mentors RJ and Jacq De Lara. Charles is a former Chef from Australia, while Glaiza is a former Certified Public Accountant for one of the biggest food chains in the Philippines.

Prior to going into business, they were already former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Australia. After a few years they decided to come home to the Philippines and take a chance at building their dreams here. They ventured into many businesses but none of those business flourished. They soon realized that starting a business is not easy. You have to worry about a lot of things.

They were about to go back to Australia once again when they decided to check out what RJ and Jacq De Lara were doing. Glaiza and Jacq were former colleagues in one of the biggest oil and gas companies in the world. Glaiza witnessed the change in lifestyle of her former colleague, and she was curious what her friend was up to. When they decided to take a leap of faith and grap the opportunity to partner up with RJ and Jacq and be part of XTRM 1-11, their lives changed dramatically.

After working the business part-time and earning extra income in US dollars, they soon found themselves in front of one of the biggest opportunity of their lives. Eventually, they decided to give up their plan to go to Australia and focus 100% of their efforts together in building their growing international business. They don’t have to go abroad anymore just to earn dollars. In a matter of months, Glaiza was able to resign from her job and pursue their business full time. They have been promoted as one of the top directors in the company and helped a lot of people from all over the Philippines and abroad earn an extra $200 – $600/week part-time. More than that, now they are the proud owners of their own BRAND NEW TOYOTA FORTUNER.

What I admire about this couple is their tremendous DRIVE and FOCUS. They won’t stop at anything. They are also very coachable and eager to learn. Even though they are already successful in their profession, they never hesitated in asking how they can be better in building their business. I know this is just the start of an amazing entrepreneurial career for them. If they were able to make it, so can you.

Why You Need a Mentor

Recently, my mentor suggested that I become more active writing in this blog again. That’s when I realized, I’ve been putting off writing for so long…Once upon a time, I used to enjoy writing, sharing stories through this blog. However, due to so many reasons, some I don’t even know why, I haven’t been writing a lot lately. Perhaps, I was just too busy. Or perhaps something else is at play.

Late last year I had the opportunity to get trained under Anthony Pangilinan on a 2-day seminar based on the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.  One of my key take-aways from that special exclusive 2-day training was the decision to write again..and to revive this blog. After the holidays, that goal has been put into the back burner once again. Until now.

Now, here I am, trying to share something that I hope would be of value to you — Why You Need a Mentor.

In 2003 I read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. It was the book that made me realize that there’s more to the world of money than what I previously knew. That book started my journey to financial freedom. I bought and devoured all books written by Robert Kiyosaki. I came to know other authors as well like Brian Tracy, Robert Allen, Anthony Robbins, Dan Kennedy, and more…I have bought more than a hundred books through the years. Even when I was working in Malaysia, I was busy colleting books. If you see me at the mall, you can only find me in either the sports section or at the bookstore. 🙂 Those were my early mentors. I’ve never met them personally, only in books. Maybe someday, I will get a chance to meet some of them as well.

When I got tired of reading, I moved on to attending seminars on money and investing. This is when I met Bo Sanchez and all his mentors, Edward Lee the chairman and owner of COL Financial a stock brokerage firm, Dean Pax Lapid, owner of multiple businesses and author of Go Negosyo books, Jomar Hilario an internet marketer turned virtual assistant trainer, Larry Gamboa, a real-estate investor and trainer, and many more. Even though I met them personally, the mentoring I received is limited to how much I was willing to pay to attend the seminar and maximize the event to get to know them personally. There are exclusive mentoring sessions with them but you would have to attend another separate seminar or a special event out of town, for which you will have to shell out money for.

I was thankful for the many mentors I’ve met and learned from in books and seminars, but I was still very hungry for more. I yearned to learn the nuts and bolts of starting a business. However, none in my family has a business background. I didn’t know where to start.

Around 5 years ago, I met one of my mentors, a young 23-year old woman who introduced me to the opportunity of a lifetime. At that time I was overworked, stressed, and looking for a way out of the situation. My friend, turned mentor introduced me to a group of young entrepreneurs in XTRM 1-11…I had a gut feeling that something rewarding and exciting is about to happen. At that time, I had no idea how to build a successful business. I was a shy and timid IT programmer stucked in front of the computer. I had no idea whether I can actually talk to people face to face. Meet strangers. Study and learn sales and marketing. Learn to lead a team to victory. And more. One thing I know, I could not have done it without my mentors.

Meet my mentor, Ms Ivy Dela Cruz-Sepe and her husband Mr Sheldon Sepe. Yes, they are younger than me. This husband and wife team are instrumental in my journey to financial freedom. Even though I was already working for 9 years as an IT consultant, they had one thing I didn’t have at that time. They had TIME. I was financially ok, but that had a price tag to pay. I had to work 16 hours a day, almost 7 days a week. I had to come to the office even on weekends. As a consultatnt, I got paid very well. I am grateful for that. But sometimes, there’s more to life than just earning money. You long to have some time off where you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. You also long to GROW more personally, not just become a dispensible cog in a money-making machine called work. I don’t know if it’s quarter life crisis, but I was constantly asking myself if this is all there is to life. I wanted out. I wanted to explore. That’s what I did, and the rest as they say is history.

Learn to become a LEADER.

I remember the feeling when I was still an employee. Yes, I had a manager, but we all know how different a manager is from a mentor.  Perhaps the closest thing I’ve experienced in the corporate world was having a counselor. But I think counselors were meant for a different reason. They were there to counsel us from our depression, work problems, and ultimately convince us not to resign from our jobs. 🙂 A mentor is different. He may actually convince you to leave your job if it was meant it will make you grow.

Leaders are not afraid to go against the grain sometimes. They walk the talk. They let their actions do the talking. They realize that they cannot expect people to do things they are not willing to do themselves. Leaders set the vision of what is possible for the people they lead. I have seen this same trait in the likes of Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg. They see things other people cannot see. They have the bravado to turn down a $1 Billion offer for something BIGGER than them, a vision of what’s possible.

One thing I realized early on in my early attempts to entrepreneurship was that business is a TEAM SPORT. You need other people to make it happen. Trying to do it all alone is going be very hard and counter productive. If you need the support and assistance of people, then you will need to learn to work in a team…and LEAD theam. The best thing that ever happened to me was become part of XTRM 1-11, an organization of young entrepreneurs, who get trained to become LEADERS. Since September 2010, this organization has created hundreds of millionaires around the world. I’m very fortunate to have had a chance to get trained and mentored through this amazing organization and learn to LEAD.

Learn from an EXPERT.

If you want to learn how to do something, you better learn from someone who has been there and have done what you intend to do. My mentor says to always remember that whenever you buy into someone else’s opinion, you are also buying into their lifestyle. It means that in life everyone will always have their own opinion, regardless if it’s something positive or negative. It doesn’t matter if they have experienced it themselves or not. Before accepting any of their opinions, it’s best to think about whether the lifestyle of the person you are speaking with has the lifetyle that you want or not. In the same way when you are about to take and want to pass the board exam, you’d better ask tips from someone who passed, not someone who failed, or worse from someone who has not even taken the exam.

The great thing about having a mentor is that they have been there. They know how it feels. They experienced a lot of mistakes, mistakes that you can avoid if you choose to listen to them. Having a mentor will allow you to get to your goals faster and more efficiently.

I remember when I had my first car, I was very excited to put the decal in front of the windshield.  I was too shy to ask the people around me. I tried to do it all myself. I watched youtube videos, read a lot of articles on how to do it…and one Saturday afternoon I finally decided to put it on. After 4 gruelling hours, it’s finally done! I was about to pack up when I saw the decal another time and noticed the small letters were missing! Arrgghh.. In my frustration I crumpled the decal and threw it in the trash can. The next day one of my teammates also wanted to put a decal on his own car. However, he was humble enough to ask help from one of our mentors, someone who had already put decals on almost all the cars in our team. I was there just observing how they are going to do it. Much to my amazement, in just 5 minutes our mentor has managed to put the decal on the car without any sweat at all! That’s when I realized, something so complicated for you to do may be very easy to do for someone who knows what he’s doing. 🙂

Learn to get FEEDBACK.

One of the things that prevents some people from succeeding is in not having someone who gives them feedback. It takes courage to accept a constructive feedback. We all know that we learn more from our mistakes than our successes. There’s value in having people give you compliments and letting you know how you did a good job, and more. However, I believe there’s also value in having people around you have the guts to tell you when you’ve made a mistake. It takes courage to give feedback constructively. It also requires a certain degree of humility to listen to feedback. More maturity may also be needed in order for you to muster enough courage to accept it and take action. You have to be open for feedback. Sometimes, people don’t give you feedback because you haven’t given them permission to do so yet. Perhaps, you do not allow yourself to become vulnerable. Your ego is still in the way. You feel you’re listening but really you are not. Having mentors around you who know that your GROWTH is more important than you feeling good is one of the best blessings you can ever have. Nobody is perfect. But perfection is not the goal, growth is.

I’m very fortunate to have met a lot of mentors in my life. But one group I consider my family is my co-mentors in XTRM 1-11. Here’s our picture together. We all are part of a bigger whole. One person can influence so many, but a group of mentors who are willing to listen and become LEADERS and EXPERTS, courageous enough to accept and give FEEDBACKS surely is going to elevate the lives of many many people around the world.

Your mentor can come from reading books, listening to their seminars, and more…but my favorite is having a mentor who you can talk to face to face, one you can open up to when you’re confused or frustrated, someone who has the courage and heart to point to your mistakes and suggest ways on how you can improve. I have a lot of mentors in business, but I also have mentors in other aspects of my life. I have spiritual mentors, mentors in building a family, and many more. I wish for you that you find that mentor in your life as well. Cheers to a happy and fulfilled life!
